Up until half term, the topic in year 5 will be Extreme Earth. This topic will be mostly Geography based as we discover how Earthquakes occur and what happens inside a volcano, including the internal parts. It will also include aspects of History as we study the 1906 Earthquake in San Francisco.

In our science lessons, we will be looking at life cycles, in both plants and animals. During this topic, we will be looking into the sexual and asexual reproduction of plants; this will include dissected a flower to find its female and male parts as well as cloning a plant from a cutting. We will also look into the different lifecycles of mammals, birds, insects and amphibians, how these differ from one another and how some animals are difficult to classify due to their lifecycle.

In our art lessons, we will be studying The Great Wave off Kanagawa by Katsushika Hokusai. Including how the art was created and how we can recreate it.

Throughout the Spring term, year 5 will be looking at Leisure and Entertainment throughout the 20th Century, in which we will be grasping how aspects of leisure such as television, music, film, football and holidays have changed and developed between 1900 and 1999. This will be mainly history-based but will be embedded into English, as well as Art, where we are researching and replicating work by Andy Warhol and Charles Rennie Mackintosh, and Design and Technology, where we will be making fairground rides.

To begin the summer term we will be reading Kensuke's Kingdom by Michael Morpurgo; this will be the basis of our writing too, through newspaper articles, balanced arguments, narratives, poems and much more.

In our science lessons we will be investigating the properties of materials and how they can change through processes such as filtering and dissolving.

Miss Beecroft is the teacher in Year 5.  She is supported in class by Mrs Gaskell.
