REQM Silver Award

Welcome back!

Happy New Year, I hope you all had a relaxing Christmas break.

For this half term, our curriculum topic is Entertainment and Leisure in the 20th Century; this looks into aspects such as TV, cinema, music, technology, football and how these have developed over the 20th Century. After half term, we will be studying Extreme Earth which will focus on earthquakes and volcanoes, including their location, features and how they occur. Our science topic is ‘Properties and Changes of Materials’ which will involve many investigations into processes such as dissolving and filtering. Both topics will continue after half term.

A few things that are useful to know:

  • Homework- this will continue as in the autumn term and homework diaries will be checked every Monday. Homework tasks will also be handed out on a Monday. Children need to make sure they are also completing the tasks set for them on TT Rockstars. Children should be reading at least 5 times a week and can fill in their diaries themselves.
  • Spelling tests- spelling tests will continue every 4 weeks.
  • Mental Maths- the children will complete a multiplication grid challenge each week on a Friday to improve their speed with multiplication facts. If possible, please also encourage your child to practise these at home.
  • Reading- the children will have guided reading sessions during the week, which will involve practising reading comprehension. There will also be opportunities to read their own book every day so it is vital that they always have a reading book with them at school which can be a book from home or the school library.
  • PE- this term, the children’s PE lesson will take place on a Tuesday afternoon. Please ensure your child has a full, named PE kit in school on this day, including hair bands for long hair and socks if your child wears tights to school.

If you have any further questions, please contact me. I look forward to working with you and your child for another enjoyable term.

Miss Beecroft is the teacher in Year 5.  She is supported in class by Mrs Turton.
