Since half term, we have been looking at forces in our science lessons. We have been focusing on gravity, friction, air resistance and water resistance.

To build on our understanding of air resistance, we were given an egg in pairs to protect when dropped from a height. We had to think about the size and shape of the packaging around the egg and the idea of a parachute.

We found that the most successful protections (the eggs that didn’t break!) had much larger parachutes and flat faces on the packaging as this had the most air resistance and therefore slowed down the egg the most when it was dropped.

On Thursday 16th October, as part of our learning about Vikings, we dressed as Viking for the day and had a go at Viking crafts through making things such as candles, Thor amulets, clay pots, clay runes and woven fabric that could be sewn together to make the sail of a longship. We also practiced being Viking warriors by using our shields to make a shield wall. During the afternoon, we acted as archaeologists, digging for artefacts then deciding what these artefacts were, who they might have been used by and where they might have been used.

In our science lesson, we looked at the distance between each planet and the sun. We scaled our solar system using ratio and proportion and toilet paper so that it would fit in our classroom. Each square represented 50,000,000 miles!

In our RE lessons, we are currently learning about Hinduism. To help our learning, we visited BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in London. We toured through the exhibition and found out about the history of the religion as well as watching an Arti ceremony. The day we visited was Ganesh’s birthday, so it was a very special day; lots of people were making offerings.

Miss Beecroft is the teacher in Year 5.  She is supported in class by Mrs Turton and Mrs Macauley.
